The Spindle Galaxy (a.k.a. Caldwell 53) is an extremely elongated elliptical galaxy (type E7). In the main image it is possible to see an oval nucleus with a thin flattened equatorial plane. Burnham indicates that the designation has been changed to S0.
The only difference between the two reduced images above is that in the right one I stretched the palette so as to show the full extent of the galaxy.
I took this picture in New Mexico.
